Commencing it's fourth year in 2015, the Art of Spontaneous Mosaics is our signature mosaic course. This Mosaic Art School of Sydney mosaic course is in the process of being Cert IV qualified, and we are currently the third stage of gaining accreditation. This is the first of it's kind in Australia and we are excited to be making this available to you.
This course is a blend of classical and contemporary approaches to mosaic art making. The teaching method is focused on the creative process - which means we explore the many different technical applications of different mosaic artists and learn from them. At the same time you will get to discover your creative process in mosaic making.
SEMESTER 1 is all about the art of CLASSICAL MOSAICS. You will learn about traditional mosaic art making techniques & design processes, and experience how to work with a variety of tools including a hammer & hardie. You will also have the opportunity to create a self portrait using marble.
SEMESTER 2 is all about FINDING YOUR VOICE. We will explore contemporary approaches of mosaics (such as Pique Assiette) and you will explore the art of working with mixed media. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to make your own ceramic tiles, using our studio kiln!
Across the one year program, you will experience working in many different mediums & different art styles, whilst also covering the foundational teachings of mosaics such as cutting techniques, learning about the different glues, substrates, application methods and more! Flat mosaics, textured mosaics, mixed media mosaics and 3D mosaics are all explored.
Throughout this course you will:
Keep an art journal / portfolio
Research mosaic topics and give a presentation
Complete several assignments
Create sample boards using different techniques
Work on a major mosaic project each semester
You will be participating in creative exercises and of course, making mosaics! You will learn about colour theory and the elements of design, how to work with sticky plastic and mesh, as well as the Spilimbergo method.
To supplement your weekly classes, a private Facebook group is also created to encourage student dialogue and support throughout the course!
