Mosaic Art Making & Design 1
Traditional Techniques



Semester 1 of Mosaic Art Making & Design will cover the foundations and traditional techniques of mosaics. 

You will be given a course manual that that will be added to weekly. It will be pack-filled with learning resources, a library of mosaic artist inspirations, the history of mosaics, as well as instructional handouts!




Fabrication & Design techniques you will learn!

In the semester you will:

• Learn various fabrication techniques (indirect, reverse paper-face, semi-reverse on mesh) and about the different types of adhesives and when to use them

• Learn how to work with cement and make a paver which you mosaic

Use different tools like the hammer and hardie, and work with marble

• 
Create several small mosaics works and one large mosaic project

·     • Lead a small community project

·     • Have many sample works: E.g. grout sample boards, colour wheel boards, classical tile cutting boards & many more

·     • Develop your technical knowledge and know how to mosaic for outdoors, wet areas and a variety of different substrates

·     • Develop your skills of designing specifically for mosaics - that means more that just a drawing

·      • Create mosaics that are flat: 2-D designs with materials including: glass, unglazed and glazed tiles, marble, smalti, mineral rocks… and more

·     • Be given many resources about mosaic artists and their creative process through podcasts, interviews and DVD’s

·     • Learn colour theory through a series of exercises to be better able to make colour choices. These exercises are designed specifically for mosaic art.

·     • Develop your drawing & design skills

·    • Be inspired by visiting guest teachers, local practicing artists and international visiting artists offering insights, new techniques and sharing their working practice.

·     • And finally, your mosaic art portfolio will be bursting with creativity, ideas, new knowledge, inspiration and stories from past and contemporary mosaic artists.

Students are only able to enrol for this course after having completed the Mosaic Art Making & Design 1 course.

The course is assessment based as it is preparing to become accredited.
There will be guest teachers and practicing artists that will share their inspirations.

This school is creating a vibrant learning environment that explores the artform of mosaics as well as developing the practical & technical expertise and the creative spirit of the student.
A student online forum is available as part of the school which will features video learning from teachers around the world.
And student discounts will apply for the purchase of materials, tools and attending visiting artists workshops.
