CETTA PILATI WORKSHOP at mass

creating a sculptural mosaic

I am delighted to announce that Cetta Pilati, artist, sculptor and mosaicist is returning to our studio to run a Sculpture & Working in Marble mosaics weekend workshop.

In 2014, Cetta introduced students to working with marble on a flat surface and guided them to create a personal symbolic gestural image. Cetta’s attentive and regardful teaching process and passion for marble, facilitated the development of the students individual expressive voice, even for those who didn’t realise they had a voice.

And now in this weekend workshop on 7th & 8th of May 2016, Cetta will take you into the wonderful world of sculpture. No prior experience is necessary. She will teach you how to design your sculptural work, make simple and structurally-sound sculptures and bases, and then how to complete the sculpture with the addition of marble mosaics.

Saturday session: Participants will design and create a 3D substrate (max 40cm height) and plan application of mosaic to sculptural form. You will expand your creative skills to practice traditional placement techniques that require no grouting on a 3D surface.

Sunday session: Sand back your 3D substrate and explore application of mosaic using Cetta’s techniques. We will take a more in-depth look at formation, placement, cutting techniques and limitless proposal for 3D forms. This workshop will guide and inspire you to uncover techniques that will allow expand your creative practice!

CETTA PILATI

Cetta Pilati is a mosaic artist based in Melbourne, VIC Australia.

Cetta is a sculptor specialising in traditional marble mosaic artwork. Cetta creates 2D and 3D pieces that are notable for their use of natural stone, traditional working methods and aesthetic sense. She creates each individual work through a meticulous labour-intensive process, which includes cutting each piece of marble by hand with the use of a hammer and hardie. Cetta’s work is a fusion of traditional technique and timeless contemporary design with a key focus on the quiet forgotten simplicity and tradition of ancient approaches to mosaic art making.

Cetta is one of a handful of artists in Australia working predominantly with marble mosaic and using ancient and traditional approaches and applying them to contemporary sculptural work.
