Working only in the range from black to white, you will have the opportunity to execute three 12cm x 12cm mosaics treatments of one abstract design.
In this 2 day workshop, you’ll learn to free up your creative flow, trust your instincts (there are myriad “right” decisions; pick any one!), make decisions quickly (keep moving forward, stop futzing), use constraints (limited colour palette, size, time, design) to move through the paralysis of too many ideas/materials, problem-solve on the fly, plumb the effects magic of grayscale (value, gradient and contrast) and develop and refine a design/idea/technique.
And of course along the way you’ll be actively learning about cutting, setting, and working with cement bonding mortar as adhesive and design element.
This 2 day workshop is designed to interest and challenge mosaic practitioners of all experience levels. A good understanding of basic mosaic principles and vocabulary is helpful but not necessary.

There’s a rhythmic mosaic alphabet waiting to be discovered in whatever type/shape of random, leftover, off-cut or machined scraps and shards of material you’ve got on hand. In this 3 day workshop, you’ll learn to organise and evaluate your available tesserae (by size, shape, height, colour, value, etc.) for exploitable relationships (likenesses, contrasts, shape matches, etc.), and cut new tesserae to augment the existing. In short, you’ll suss out their unique syntax and from it develop a coherent and interesting mosaic language.
As you build a 45cm x 35cm mosaic, you’ll also revisit a few essential principles of Roman mosaic grammar, figure out how to transition effectively from one material to another, discover how materials can guide the development of an abstract composition, investigate how open space can effectively function as a focal point and a balance to the inherent density of mosaic, and work with mortar as a design element.
This 3 day workshop is designed to interest and challenge mosaic practitioners of all experience levels. A good understanding of basic mosaic principles and vocabulary is helpful but not necessary.

Kelley Knickerbocker is a visual artist from the USA, working in Seattle.
She left a 22 year administrative career at the University of Washington in 2006 to found a mosaic studio (Rivenworks Mosaics, Seattle) and direct her accumulated skills in project management and planning toward designing/fabricating/installing mosaic artwork for public, commercial, residential and gallery environments.
Kelley’s ruggedly dimensional mosaics, in a broad range of materials, are a textural distillation of her fascination with contrast, material properties and the technical challenges of mosaic construction. Sharing that fascination and learning from other art makers are keys to the freshness of Kelley’s mosaic practice, and she travels extensively throughout North America speaking, collaborating and teaching in-depth workshops on mosaic style and technique.
Kelley’s fine art mosaic panels have been accepted to numerous national and international juried exhibitions, and many reside in private collections. She is an active member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists.
